A bad time to Vorm an opinion

- BY DARREN LEWIS @Mirrordarren

WITH Hugo Lloris suspended, the big decision for Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was whether to play regular No.2 Michel Vorm or Paulo Gazzaniga, the fans’ choice.

After Vorm’s revelation pre-match that he was “bored” on the bench, Gazzaniga (below) made the cut.

Just over a minute in, the Spurs No.3 was picking the ball out of the net – a spectator as PSV top-scorer Luuk de Jong gave the visitors a shock lead at Wembley.

Gazzaniga had little to do after that as Spurs tested the PSV defence time and again but found Dutch keeper Jeroen Zoet in inspired form, at least until Harry Kane found his shooting boots.

But at least we know a little bit more about where the 26-year-old from Murphy – Pochettino’s home town in Argentina – stands in the Spurs pecking order, even allowing for that heart-in-mouth moment when he was almost robbed in front of goal by Hirving Lozano.

You have to wonder what 35-year-old Vorm was thinking with his curious comments in the week of such a crucial tie.

“I think I have a few good years left,” he told Dutch publication De Telegraaf. “My contract expires after this season, then we’ll see how it goes. I feel very good. Now I have to make sure that I stay fit. It’s always boring to sit on the bench.”

With those remarks Vorm pretty much made Pochettino’s mind up for him. And Gazzaniga showed his worth when saving superbly late on.
