Babbel raises glass to Klopp Anfield spirit

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

JURGEN KLOPP has brought back the “spirit of Liverpool” to Anfield, claims Markus Babbel.

The former Reds defender is hugely impressed with the transformation his fellow German has engineered to make the team title challengers and one of Europe’s top sides.

“For me, Jurgen Klopp is doing an unbelievable job, unbelievable,” said the 2001 Treble winner.

“The people trust him, which is the biggest thing you can get. And the boys trust him.

“He’s one of the faces of Liverpool FC. He brought the spirit of the club back and I just say compliments to Jurgen, a fantastic guy.

“He’s not an actor, he’s not playing a game, he’s an original. He was like this for seven years at Borussia Dortmund and now he has brought his confidence and talent to Liverpool – and the people love it.

“He brings good players to the club and the quality of the game they are

playing is outstanding. I’m a supporter. If I had a ticket I’d love to go to every home game because it’s a dream to watch them. It doesn’t matter if they win or lose, for me, the style of play is fantastic.”

Gerard Houllier’s 2001 side, which Babbel was part of, was one of

Anfield’s most entertaining of recent years and the former Germany centreback says Klopp (below) is also playing joyful football. Babbel, coach of Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia, claims this rather than silverware is Klopp’s most significant achievement.

He added: “Seriously, it doesn’t matter if Liverpool win something or not – the style of football they have played in many, many games is great.

“Now they have had a couple of draws, but that’s normal. You can’t play 38 games at the highest performance level, it’s not possible. But how they are playing and have improved is a great enjoyment.”
