Female tiger killed by new mate at zoo

Asim mauled Melati A FEMALE Sumatran tiger at London Zoo has been killed by her new mate on their first introducti­on.

Melati, 10, was mauled to death by Asim, seven, despite “positive signs” between them when they were kept in adjoining enclosures, the zoo said.

A statement said staff were “devastated”.

“As with all big cats, introducti­ons, however carefully planned, are high risk,” it said.

“Staff used flares and alarms to distract the pair, but Asim had already overpowere­d Melati.”

Asim’s arrival from Denmark on January 29 was part of a European breeding programme.

He is believed to have been granted a one-third reduction on a proposed fouryear jail term because he pleaded guilty.

He has been in custody awaiting extraditio­n since his January 28.
