Dancehall documentary to screen at The Triskel

Irish Examiner - County - - Front page - Christy Parker

A documentary tracing the story of one of Cork’s most beloved dance halls will be screened at Cork city’s Triskel cinema on August 30. Wish You Were Here —The Redbarn Story captures the magic and excitement of the dancehall era through the story of Youghal’s famous ballroom by the sea.

The 70-minute review is laced with joy, sadness and romance as it brings the past to life through music, faces and memories.

Made by Complete Control Films, the documentary was highly acclaimed by a 600strong audience at its only previous screening in Youghal, last May.

Built by the Lucey brothers in 1957, Redbarn hosted showband legends like Joe Dolan, Brendan Bowyer and Margo and a competing culture including Rob Strong, Tweed and Chubby Checker.

Amidst a mind-jogging soundtrack, performers recall long, arduous van journeys, while past dancers remember packing into cars, ‘sneaking out’, hitching, cycling or walking to Redbarn’s lights.

Filmmaker Michael Twomey reflects: “That kind of social interaction will never happen again.”

Starting at 8 pm, Tickets €10 from Triskel box office 021 4272022; triskelartscen
