Crowley wins inaugural Avondhu 3x3 series
ALTHOUGH having to settle for second on the night to Tipperary athlete Paddy Cummins, Bryan Crowley of the Watergrasshill club took the overall honours in the inaugural Avondhu 3×3 Race Series.
This comprised of three races over three different distances, the Conna 5km, Mitchelstown GR8 8km and the Fermoy four-mile, all of which took place over a four-week period. The latter event had to be moved from Fermoy town to Ballyhooly and a fine clear evening saw almost 200 runners turning out over a mostly flat out-and-back route in this efficiently organised Grange-Fermoy AC promotion.
Cummins and Crowley were together until the closing stages when the MoycarkeyCoolroo man pulled away for a nine-second victory, recording a time of 21:36 for the four miles. Young Paul Hartnett of the Midleton club, winner of the Munster Schools junior cross-title earlier this year, finished third in only his second-ever road race.
Carol Finn of Leevale added another victory to her tally when winning the women’s race in 24:47.
Like Crowley in the men’s event, Ellen Hanley’s second place guaranteed her the overall title and for good measure the Grange-Fermoy athlete also achieved a personal best time of 25:35.
Bryan Crowley, right, second in the Ballyhooly race and winner of the ovrall series, receiving his prize from Ollie Murphy of Grange-Fermoy AC.
