Twomey drives Nemo to victory
NEMO RANGERS progressed to the second round of the Junior A Hurling Championship as they defeated Ballinascarthy by eight points at a blustery Newcestown on Saturday evening.
A brilliant display of finishing from centre forward Brian Twomey was enough to see Nemo safely through to the latter stages of the competition.
Rangers opened the scoring after just two minutes when Twomey notched his first point of the afternoon with an excellent free. Ballinascarthy responded well with two quick fire set pieces of their own with Jeremy Ryan twice splitting the uprights with a 65 and a free from a difficult angle.
But with quarter of an hour played, Rangers again edged in front and established a lead that they would hold for the rest of proceedings thanks to a goal from Kevin O’Donovan.
Jack Horgan’s excellent pass picked out O’Donovan and after a clever turn, the full forward drilled his strike low past the keeper from close range. The rest of the first half turned into the Brian Twomey show as he added six further scores to his tally including two brilliant scores from play.
Ballinascarthy remained within touching distance thanks to overs from Darragh Hennessey and a couple of frees from Jeremy Ryan to make the score at the interval 1-7 to 0-5.
Nemo’s Shane Horgan grabbed a brace of points at the beginning of the second half either side of two more dead-ball scores from Ballinascarthy’s Jeremy Ryan.
But Rangers soon regained control of the contest as they scored four more points without reply with that man Twomey firing them all.
With the game drawing to a close, Sean Ryan and Ricky O’Flynn added a bit more respect to the score line but they would rue hitting 10 wide during the game. Nemo’s Brian Twomey completed the scoring with a free late on as Rangers march forward relentlessly.
