Rovers progress to JAFC final
Glenbower Rovers 0-7 Lisgoold 0-4
GLENBOWER Rovers will play Erin’s Own in the Michael O’Connor Motor Factors-sponsored East Cork JAFC final, for the Jim Ryan Cup. They beat Lisgoold in the semi-final in Rostellan.
In a low-scoring first-half, Glenbower Rovers dominated, but should have had a few more scores.
Their opening point was kicked over by Johnny O’Connor, from play.
It took a further eight minutes for the Killeagh men to register their next score, from a Kieran Lane free, following three very scoreable chances and two missed frees.
Glenbower added another, placed-ball score from Lane in the 13th minute, but, at this stage, Lisgoold were starting to get into the game.
Ciaran O’Shea scored a point for Lisgoold in the first quarter and the game then turned a little niggly, with yellow cards being dished out at a tremendous rate, despite the fact that it was a tough, but not dirty match.
Glenbower Rovers finished the half with a very well-taken point from play, from the boot of Matthew Murphy, and they led by three points at halftime.
On the resumption, it was a complete turnaround. Lisgoold started to come alive and two second-half John Cashman frees, in the opening ten minutes, brought the Glenbower lead down to the bare minimum.
At this stage, Lisgoold had Glenbower in all sorts of trouble, but couldn’t deliver the killer blow and, eventually, Rovers broke and Sean Long sent over the ball from a free. With 12 minutes to go, Cashman replied with another monster free and, again, Lisgoold looked like pushing on in the game, but Glenbower Rovers never panicked.
In yet another counter-attack break, Long was on target with another free, 15 metres out, and Lisgoold had to throw caution to the wind.
Rovers again punished them on the counter-attack, with a score from Long in injury time, to lead by a goal, and that is how it finished. Scorers for Glenbower Rovers: S Long 0-3, Kieran Lane 0-2 f, M Murphy, J O’Connor 0-1 each.
Lisgoold: J Cashman 0-3 (0-2 f), C O’Shea 0-1.
