Reunion planned for Douglas 1982 underage winning teams
It was the year that, at underage level, they won three county titles, two at the top level.
Their U16 football team created their own bit of history as they won the A county final (now Premier 1) for the first time in the club, beating Mallow in the final in Fermoy.
Before then the last, and only time, they had won the city championship was back in 1958. Then there was no county championship at this level so that was as far as they could go.
However this changed in the 70s when the county title was introduced and it was 82 before Douglas got the chance to put their hands on the trophy.
In the first round of the city championship they had a narrow win over Bishopstown, before beating Ballyphehane in the semi-final.
The final, played in Passage, they took on a Barrs side going for three in-a-row. But it was Douglas’ day as they won by 1-5 to 0-3.
Attentions then turned to the county final, played in Fermoy in early December. Mallow were their opponents and again another close game ensued before the city side came out on top.
Their U14 side enjoyed a season where they won several trophies, including the Féile B huring title and A county football title, beating Carrigaline in the final.
This added to two county wins by their U12 side in the same years. Firstly the footballers showed their potential with a win over near-neighbours Nemo Rangers in the city semi-final. In the city final they took on a fancied Bishopstown side, but came out on top by 3-6 to 0-2 and it was on to the county final.
Again it was another close game they managed to win by 0-8 to 0-4 and bring the club its first county success at this level.
Confidence boosted by this they went in search of city and county B titles at hurling level.
They got the better of Brian Dillons in the city final before taking on Castletownroche in the county final.
A late goal secured the title for Douglas to cap off a great year for the club at this level. To mark the 35th anniversary of these wins they are holding a reunion of the sides at the clubhouse on Friday, September 29, from 8.30pm onwards.
