Sheep’s Head Hike has new date after postponement due to weather warning
The charity behind one of West Cork’s biggest and most popular fundraising events has announced a new date for its annual Sheep’s Head Hike.
The organiser of the event Christian Aid Ireland had to postpone its original date in September for the hike following severe weather warnings.
It will now take place on the rugged Sheep’s Head Peninsula on October 14.
Christian Aid worker and member of the organising committee, Andrew Coleman, said: “It’s a fantastic event for walkers of all levels and families. It never fails to deliver a great day out and takes place amongst the most stunning Cork scenery, capturing all the beauty of West Cork’s Sheep’s Head Way and the adjoining countryside.”
There are two routes on offer with a local guide on hand to describe the unique history and features of the area. The Poet’s Way is a 16km hill walk that takes approximately 4 ½ hours and is for more experienced walkers. The Farranamanagh Loop is a 6.3km flat, family-friendly route, that takes approximately 2.5 hours and is suitable for all levels.
Registration is from 11 am on the day of the hike in Kilcrohane Community Hall. The walk starts at 11.30 am and the registration fee is donation based, with organisers hoping people will be as generous as possible on the day in supporting Christian Aid’s work with people living in poverty.
“The Sheep’s Head Hike is organised by a wonderful local committee and would not be possible without the support of many local volunteers and supporters, from group leaders to bus drivers and catering,” said Andrew.
“A big thank you also to The Red Cross, Rural Transport and The Gourmet Grill for their support. It’s inspiring to see so many people involved in a local effort to show such compassion and generosity for people in great need.”
Walkers are advised to bring walking shoes, walking clothes (no jeans), a raincoat, something to drink, snacks and an extra change of clothes in case of heavy rain.
Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed on the public amenity, the Sheep’s Head Way.
“Thank you to all who were planning to support this annual fundraising event on the original date and we apologise again for any inconvenience caused,” said Andrew.
