Deserved award for all-rounder Lauren
Versatile Lauren Homan was rewarded with the City and County Youth Sports Star Award at a function in the Metropole Hotel, Cork after a stunning season helped Cork regain the All-Ireland Senior Camogie title.
The young St Vincent’s player was a real menace for opposition defenders as it was extremely difficult to dispossess her once she got possession.
Time and again, the creative play of Homan helped grab key scores for her club that ultimately gained a call-up to inter-county senior duty.
Her commitment and skills, across a range of sports, earned Lauren the monthly award after a call-up for the Cork Senior panel in the summer following eye-catch- ing performances in the minor grade for both Cork and her club St Vincent’s.
“To come on during the closing 15 minutes in the All Ireland against Kilkenny was a huge experience, indescribable, the feeling of winning an All-Ireland senior medal in my first year was truly amazing.
Compared to minor level, the senior training is much more intensive and I was also preparing for my Leaving Certificate and it proved a hectic season”, she said.
“The St Vincent’s club are fantastic, offering terrific encouragement. At every Cork game, this year, the St Vincent’s support was phenomenal with busloads of supporters present.”
The skilful Homan is a keen sportswoman. Her soccer talents surfaced at Lakewood AFC prior to signing for Cork City Women’s FCwhere she co captained the side to win the U16 Gaynor Cup.
During her minor camogie involvement with Cork, Homan was also a member of the Ireland U17 soccer squad who travelled to Turkey where they reached the European Elite Phase.
I’ve put camogie number one since the summer. Paudie Murray is a brilliant manager, absolutely trusts the involvement of young players on giving us the opportunity to enhance our careers on a call-up to the senior panel,” said the Business and Marketing student at Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa.
“Hopefully, we can get back to Croke Park with the Cork seniors in 2018 but it will demand a lot of hard work to retain the title,” said Lauren.
