Fishermen’s Mass in Youghal

Irish Examiner - County - - Front page - Christy Parker

Youghal’s annual fishermen’s Mass, held to remember deceased sailors and fishermen from the region, and especially those who lost their lives at sea, will be celebrated in the town’s parish church at 10am next Saturday.

Members of the Irish Navy, the RNLI and Coastguards, will join families of departed ones from across the Blackwater Valley.

Musical and singing accompaniment will be led by Redmond Ansbro, while a range of newly-discovered maritime photographs will be on display in the church porch, courtesy of Andy Kelly from Kilmac- thomas in west Waterford.

Cork City priest Fr Bernard Cotter is due to participate in the celebration, representing the last living family connection with the ‘Nellie Fleming’ schooner.

The ship sank off Ardmore bay in 1913 with the loss of five lives, including the priest’s grand-uncle.
