Speakers to offer words of wisdom

Irish Examiner - County - - Front page - Áilín Quinlan

A serial quitter-turned-adventurer who stood face to face with a grizzly bear, and survived to tell the tale, joins an international author and management consultant to speak to an audience of some 150 in a West Cork town next week.

And if you’re among the 75% of people who suffer from a condition known as glossophobia, you should think about attending. Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking, and is very common but considered one of the greatest fears a person can have.

But Imelda Westcott, president of Bandon Toastmasters, says it’s a condition which is not all that difficult to overcome.

So, Bandon Toastmasters Club has arranged for two motivational figures to speak at the Munster Arms Hotel on Thursday week next, February 22.

It’s the first time the organisation has invited speakers of this calibre to the town and, already, some 150 interested members of the public are expected to attend the Ignite Your Potential event.

Henk vander Klok quit two universities, a wrestling team, the Dutch marine corps, and many other things. In 2011 he says he reinvented himself as an adventurer, in order to prove to himself and to others that he could stick with something.

In the years that followed, Mr Van der Klok walked from England to Rome, cycled from Holland to Istanbul, spent several months leading pack horses across the Canadian wilderness, and paddled the entire Mississippi river in a kayak. He slept in graveyards, was chased by feral dogs in Romania, and stood face to face with a grizzly bear in Canada. Over time, he discovered that trying all these new things had a surprisingly beneficial effect on him.

Eighteen months after joining Toastmasters, Mr Van der Klok gave his first TED Tall, and Bandon organisers say he’s a hugely inspirational speaker.

Mr Van der Klok’s fellow speaker on the night is author, business coach, management consultant and former lawyer Walt Hampton, who now lives in Castle towns hen din West Cork.

Mr Hampton will speak on the importance of living a life that matters. Doors open at 7.30pm and the event begins at 8pm. Tickets through Eventbrite, €10 plus booking fee.
