The European Commission is adopting implementing acts to provide aid in the form of advanced CAP payments to drought-hit member states, following a request for aid from Portugal, Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg. Italy is also badly hit by drought, with the Coldiretti farmers association saying almost two-thirds of Italian farmland has been affected, costing the agriculture industry around €2 billion.

At least 10 Italian regions were reportedly preparing requests to the agriculture ministry for a state of natural calamity to be declared because of the drought.

The Ministry of Agriculture has opened up emergency funds of around €700 million to boost the efficiency of the country’s irrigation systems.
