Aw­beg Macra bowled over

The first com­pe­ti­tion of the Macra na Feirme year saw mem­bers of Aw­beg Macra head to Black­pool to take part in the Avondhu 10-Pin Bowl­ing con­test. Fer­moy Macra will progress to the next round. They rolled on with the evening’s en­ter­tain­ment with a night out in Cork City. September looks set to be a very busy month for the club, with a jam-packed calendar of events. To­mor­row, the club’s quiz teams will be com­pet­ing in the Avondhu round of Ques­tion Time. Mean­while, Aw­beg’s weekly sports night kicks off again with a visit to Mal­low Driv­ing Range on September 13. On September 15, Avondhu Macra’s beef and sheep stock judg­ing work­shop will be held on the farm of club mem­ber Adrian Cur­tain in But­te­vant, and on September 29, Aw­beg will have a night out in Mal­low to wel­come new mem­bers to the club. Aw­beg is based in the ar­eas sur­round­ing the Aw­beg River in Co Cork in­clud­ing But­te­vant, Church­town, Don­eraile, and Killavullen. For the first time ever, the big­gest event on the Macra na Feirme calendar, The Rally, will be held in Co Meath. Meath Macra na Feirme and Meath County Coun­cil have come to­gether to host the a n n u a l Ma c r a n a F e i r m e Young Farm­ers’ Con­fer­ence o ve r the Oc­to­ber Bank Hol­i­day week­end.

S p o n s o r e d by K e e n a n All­tech, the rally will run as part of the coun­cil’s ‘Make it Meath’ cam­paign, and will show­case all that is on of­fer across the agri­cul­tural sec­tor. De­tails of the event were re­cently of­fi­cially un­veiled in the City North Ho­tel in Gor­manstown, with Macra na­tional pres­i­dent James Healy among those in at­ten­dance.

The char­ity part­ner for the Make It Meath Royal Rally will be Dogs Trust, and the rally com­mit­tee have al­ready had a chance to see where the money will be go­ing, hav­ing vis­ited the Dogs Trust fa­cil­ity in Dublin.

Meath will wel­come more than 3,000 young farm­ers to the area to dis­cover all that the Boyne Val­ley has to of­fer. For the avid and novice farmer, the week­end events will in­clude the Macra na Feirme Annual Con­fer­ence, f a r m wa l k s , t h e n at i o n a l fi­nal of the dairy stock judg­ing com­pe­ti­tion, and the an­nounce­ment of Macra Club of the Year.

There will also be an ar­ray of en­ter­tain­ment each evening at the City North Ho­tel. Der­mot Con­nolly, chair­man of the rally com­mit­tee, said: “It’s fan­tas­tic to have Meath County Coun­cil on board with us as the main spon­sors of the Make It Meath Royal Rally.
