Awbeg Macra bowled over
The first competition of the Macra na Feirme year saw members of Awbeg Macra head to Blackpool to take part in the Avondhu 10-Pin Bowling contest. Fermoy Macra will progress to the next round. They rolled on with the evening’s entertainment with a night out in Cork City. September looks set to be a very busy month for the club, with a jam-packed calendar of events. Tomorrow, the club’s quiz teams will be competing in the Avondhu round of Question Time. Meanwhile, Awbeg’s weekly sports night kicks off again with a visit to Mallow Driving Range on September 13. On September 15, Avondhu Macra’s beef and sheep stock judging workshop will be held on the farm of club member Adrian Curtain in Buttevant, and on September 29, Awbeg will have a night out in Mallow to welcome new members to the club. Awbeg is based in the areas surrounding the Awbeg River in Co Cork including Buttevant, Churchtown, Doneraile, and Killavullen. Meath Macra na Feirme and Meath County Council have come together to host the a n n u a l Ma c r a n a F e i r m e Young Farmers’ Conference o ve r the October Bank Holiday weekend.
S p o n s o r e d by K e e n a n Alltech, the rally will run as part of the council’s ‘Make it Meath’ campaign, and will showcase all that is on offer across the agricultural sector. Details of the event were recently officially unveiled in the City North Hotel in Gormanstown, with Macra national president James Healy among those in attendance.
The charity partner for the Make It Meath Royal Rally will be Dogs Trust, and the rally committee have already had a chance to see where the money will be going, having visited the Dogs Trust facility in Dublin.
Meath will welcome more than 3,000 young farmers to the area to discover all that the Boyne Valley has to offer. For the avid and novice farmer, the weekend events will include the Macra na Feirme Annual Conference, f a r m wa l k s , t h e n at i o n a l final of the dairy stock judging competition, and the announcement of Macra Club of the Year.
There will also be an array of entertainment each evening at the City North Hotel. Dermot Connolly, chairman of the rally committee, said: “It’s fantastic to have Meath County Council on board with us as the main sponsors of the Make It Meath Royal Rally.
