Bad news for the wine drinkers
A very small 2017 harvest is expected in most of the winegrowing regions in Europe. The bad news for wine drinkers is due to heavy hailstorms and hard frosts in the spring, followed by drought in the summer, causing considerable damage to vineyards.
The harvest is expected to be 16% lower than 2016 in Spain, 17% lower in France, and 21% lower in Italy.
Even greater reductions are expected in some regions within these countries.
For example, Castilla-la-Mancha in Spain expects 19% less grapes than last year, whilst Sicilia in Italy expects a decline of 35%.
