Online tool instant hit with dairy farmers
The openness of dairy farmers to new technology was clear last week, when more 1,000 herdowners quickly checked out a new online support tool that instantly ranks dairy cows on their expected future profit potential, based on the most up-to-date information available.
Last week, ICBF and Teagasc launched COW (Cow’s Own Worth), to aid farmers in cow culling and retention decisions.
Within two days, it had been accessed by more than 1,000 different herdowners.
It is part of the HerdPlus package, with no additional cost, available through HerdPlus for dairy herds that are spring-calving and currently milk recording, with some data recording on fertility and health events (such as inseminations/natural serves or pregnancy scans, lameness and mastitis).
Within seconds, it considers factors such as the cow’s genetic merit (estimated breeding values and hybrid vigour), age, milk performance, health performance, most recent calving date, and predicted calving date from available inseminations or pregnancy diagnosis, and ranks them on the basis of profit potential.
