Tomato vendetta

Irish Examiner - Farming - - COVER STORY -

A decision by Naples to claim the tomato as its own has sparked fierce debate with the neighbouring Puglia region. Naples, capital of the Campania region, requested that Italy’s agricultural ministry grant IGP (Protected Geographic Indication) for Neapolitan peeled tomatoes. Puglia objected, with one politician claiming the region “is vital to the southern tomato industry and it’s our duty to protect our producers’. Puglia produces over seven times as much tomatoes as Campania, by weight.
