Is there a market for organic food?

Yes, and the headline figures certainly suggest organics is growing. Year-on-year growth is strong in Ireland, with the market up from about €100m in 2014 to €200m today. Encouragingly, there never was a recession-related dip in the organic market in Europe. The EU market is now worth over €30bn, with particularly strong and growing markets in Germany and France worth over half of that.

How do the organic farming sectors perform financially and otherwise, sector by sector? Beef: usually organic farmers over €4.50 per kg, approaching €5 per kg seasonally. On the other hand, the cost of organic concentrate feeds is €550 per tonne.

Milk: the price per litre to farmers averages 49c (60c for winter milk, 34c for summer milk).

Milk yield is typically about 6000 litres per year. Glenisk and the Little Milk Company are the main players in the market.
