It’s complicated

How Hard Can It Be? Allison Pearson, €14.41 The 56-year-old author Allison Pearson has produced a new novel featuring Kate Reddy, the famed protagonist in her international bestseller I Don’t Know How She Does It. Kate is counting down the days until she is 50 — but not in a good way, we are told. Described as a comingof-age story for turning the half-century mark, this time she’s juggling teenagers, ageing parents and getting back into the workplace, so hitting the big Five-O in her mind, means she may be able to become “invisible”. For those of us well over 50, who don’t feel invisible, we may find ourselves laughing at Kate’s antics, but also sighing with relief that we don’t have to multi-manage such a complicated life. Either way, it’s fiction but with a message that life is what you make of it.
