Pneumo is a bacteria which can cause serious illness including meningitis, pneumonia and septicaemia. Of those who get infected, one in four will develop meningitis, one in four will develop pneumonia, and one in 10 will die. Those aged 65 and over are at increased risk, but according to the Immunisation Guidelines for Ireland, those officially at-risk include people with diabetes, asthma, heart disease, as well as those with chronic renal disease and chronic lung problems. The #KnowPneumo campaign, launched by its ambassador, broadcaster Mary Whelan, aims to raise awareness about the disease and a number of patient groups have joined forces as part of the initiative, including Age Action, Diabetes Ireland, the Asthma Society of Ireland and Croi.
