Our Souls at Night, by Kent Haruf, €5.50 If you watch Netflix you may have seen this starring Jane Fonda and Robert Redford. If you can resist, however, go to the book first, to sample the beautifully written story of two 70-somethings, a widow and widower, discovering new ways of kicking convention, while finding a solution to the loneliness that can hit men and women at that stage of life when left alone in their empty homes. Set in Holt, Colorado, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbour, Louis Waters, whom she barely knew and proposes to him that he visit her each night to sleep with her platonically, as that is the time when loneliness hits most. Their brave adventures — their pleasures and difficulties, including dealing with judgmental outbursts from family and community — would surely resonate with readers of all ages.
