Chronic ob­struc­tive lung dis­ease (COPD), bet­ter known as bron­chi­tis or em­phy­sema, is the fourth most com­mon cause of death in Ire­land af­ter lung can­cer, heart and stroke. And the risk of get­ting it in­creases with age; it af­fects one in 10 adults aged over 40 years. More than 380,000 peo­ple liv­ing in Ire­land have COPD, but more than 170,000 peo­ple don’t know that they have it. World COPD Day, a global cam­paign to raise aware­ness of the con­di­tion, takes place on Novem­ber 15. COPD Sup­port Ire­land are or­gan­is­ing a week of events to help high­light the dis­ease and its symp­toms. There will be or­gan­ised walks, a #let­stake­copd so­cial me­dia cam­paign and much more.
