Fresh beds and bedding to brighten our world

Bedding relies on a soft touch. High thread counts in crisp cotton, real linen and shiny silk are an refreshing luxury on the body and regulate temperature throughout the year.

Modern linen can be laundered weekly at 30˚ in your washing machine without any problem. Egyptian cotton has long staple fibres, making it highly prized. Quality percale is an easy care fabric and perfect in a 60%-40% mix for family bedding with no ironing required. Silk requires deferential treatment, but a quick wash on a delicates setting with wool soap, will do the trick.

With a high thread count in hand, stick to pure white, dove grey or cream sheets or duvet sets and put artistry into layers of throws and cushions as the fancy takes you from season to season. The bed does fall inside the area of soft furnishings — look out for fabric collections which play with scale, tone and pattern families without slavishly delivering one material to bedspreads, upholstery and window-treatments.

If you genuinely prefer to iron your bed linen, invest in a steam generator with a separated tank, and choose a wider ironing board to cover those metres in a few fluid passes. For a wide range of brands online try Irish firm Bedeck at bedeckhome.com.
