Cork bargain hunters and auction-goers spoilt for choice
There are two auctions in the city next week with great value on offer, writes Des O’sullivan
With sales at Marsh’s and Woodward’s, Cork City auction goers will be spoiled for choice next Saturday.
Woodward’s on Cook St kicks off at 11am with a sale that includes a 10ft-long mahogany dining table and a set of 12 chairs (€800-€1,500); a pair of rosewood tea tables (€1,000-€2,000); a pair of Chesterfield couches (€800€1,500) and a French gilt three-piece suite (€800€1,000).
Antique furniture features prominently at Marshs’ sale, scheduled to get under way at noon, around the corner at Rochford’s Lane, off South Mall/ Grand Parade.
Lots on offer here include a Georgian breakfront four door bookcase (€2,500€3,000), a pair of William IV rosewood card tables (€2,000-€2,500); a Regency rosewood Cork marbletopped side cabinet (€1,000€2,000), and a 19th century Chinese carved padouk display cabinet (€600-€800).
A curiosity at this sale is is a Victorian carved grizzly bear 45” high (€700-800). Othergeorgianfurnitureon offer includes an early mahogany chest on stand, a rosewood brass inlaid drop leaf table, and an inlaid demi lune tea table.
With prices for antique furniture remaining depressed, bargain hunters will have plenty to choose from at each sale.
Woodward’s, which is on view today, tomorrow, and all next week, will offer an Edwardian inlaid desk, a Frenchstyle Vernis Martin cabinet; a Georgian bureau, a pair of rosewood tea tables, an Irish long case clock; a Georgian sofa table as well as garden furniture; Persian rugs and art. Artists represented in- clude Harry Kernoff, William Crozier, Majella O’neill Collins, John Schwatschke, and Elizabeth Steiner.
Among around 350 lots at Marsh’s are an early Georgian mahogany chest on stand, a Georgian brass inlaid drop leaf table; an inlaid demi lune tea table; Victorian dining tables, sets of chairs; long case and wall clocks, porcelain; china and books.
Viewing is from 10am to 8pm next Thursday and Friday and from 10am on this day week.
