Cork bar­gain hun­ters and auc­tion-go­ers spoilt for choice

With sales at Marsh’s and Wood­ward’s, Cork City auc­tion go­ers will be spoiled for choice next Satur­day.

Wood­ward’s on Cook St kicks off at 11am with a sale that in­cludes a 10ft-long ma­hogany din­ing ta­ble and a set of 12 chairs (€800-€1,500); a pair of rose­wood tea ta­bles (€1,000-€2,000); a pair of Ch­ester­field couches (€800€1,500) and a French gilt three-piece suite (€800€1,000).

An­tique fur­ni­ture fea­tures promi­nently at Marshs’ sale, sched­uled to get un­der way at noon, around the cor­ner at Rochford’s Lane, off South Mall/ Grand Pa­rade.

Lots on of­fer here in­clude a Ge­or­gian break­front four door book­case (€2,500€3,000), a pair of Wil­liam IV rose­wood card ta­bles (€2,000-€2,500); a Re­gency rose­wood Cork mar­ble­topped side cabi­net (€1,000€2,000), and a 19th cen­tury Chi­nese carved padouk dis­play cabi­net (€600-€800).

A cu­rios­ity at this sale is is a Vic­to­rian carved griz­zly bear 45” high (€700-800). Other­ge­or­gian­fur­ni­tureon of­fer in­cludes an early ma­hogany chest on stand, a rose­wood brass in­laid drop leaf ta­ble, and an in­laid demi lune tea ta­ble.

With prices for an­tique fur­ni­ture re­main­ing de­pressed, bar­gain hun­ters will have plenty to choose from at each sale.

Wood­ward’s, which is on view to­day, to­mor­row, and all next week, will of­fer an Ed­war­dian in­laid desk, a French­style Ver­nis Martin cabi­net; a Ge­or­gian bureau, a pair of rose­wood tea ta­bles, an Ir­ish long case clock; a Ge­or­gian sofa ta­ble as well as gar­den fur­ni­ture; Per­sian rugs and art. Artists rep­re­sented in- clude Harry Ker­noff, Wil­liam Crozier, Ma­jella O’neill Collins, John Sch­watschke, and El­iz­a­beth Steiner.

Among around 350 lots at Marsh’s are an early Ge­or­gian ma­hogany chest on stand, a Ge­or­gian brass in­laid drop leaf ta­ble; an in­laid demi lune tea ta­ble; Vic­to­rian din­ing ta­bles, sets of chairs; long case and wall clocks, porce­lain; china and books.

View­ing is from 10am to 8pm next Thurs­day and Fri­day and from 10am on this day week.
