■ Gardener’s World presenter, Monty Don is set to headline the Carlow Garden Festival from July 21-30, this year. The festival could prove to be one of the highlights of the season for those who like to talk and listen, as well as work on gardens. Running over 10 days, it has a star-studded line-up of top-grade gardeners and a great list of events — but be warned, it ain’t cheap, if you want to catch more that one or two speakers. However, The 2017 programme features a great list of all the big name UK gardeners combined with the best of Irish garden broadcasters, writers and Chelsea medal trailblazers. Highlights include a master class with Roy Lancaster, Paul Smyth and Joe Swift at €35 at Altamont Plant Sale on July 28. For more info on a great programme of events, check out: carlowgardentrail.com.
