College Maybe looks poised to overcome draw in McCarthy Oaks

Irish Examiner - Racing - - GREYHOUNDS -

The draw for tonight's climax of the McCarthy Insurance Group Cork Oaks has thrown the final wide open as, on form, College Maybe should be the proverbial 'good thing', but she must overcome a terrible draw in trap six.

Trained by Mossy O'Connor, she posted a brilliant 28.32 in victory last weekend but she'll need a flyer if she's to produce a similar performance this time.

The main issue is the fact there are a number of very smart earlypacers in opposition, and the fastest of them are drawn along the rails.

The favourite aside, Highview Dolly has impressed in both rounds to date and if she can clear the two runners drawn on her inner, she could really put it up to the favourite.

Ian Waterworth's bitch beat College Maybe when they met in the first round but taking a length out of Ballycowen Moll on the run to the bend will not be easy.

Locnamon Bridie won the Christmas Oaks at Shelbourne, using the inside line to perfection to score. She hasn't brought her very best form to Curraheen, but her 28.15 at Shelbourne means she must be respected from a draw that could play to her strengths.

Given the circumstances, College Maybe is not one to back at a very short price but her class may be enough to see her through.

Gotnewpairshoes is a confident selection to take the final of the Cork GOBA A4 Stake.

Laura O'Sullivan's dog was very impressive when winning his semi-final heat and, with another favourable draw, is very hard to oppose. He has plenty in hand of his rivals on that showing and a trap-to-line victory beckons.

Trumpers Lexi is an improving bitch and her strong-running style should carry her into the picture.

Another strong candidate for the nap selection was Lemon Mel, who contests the second semi-final of the Guilders Bar A2 525.

Pauline Lennon’s bitch was unfortunate not to turn in front last week, but with two modest breakers on her inner this time, she should lead all the way.

The in-form Mumhan Rising stays well and rates the danger.

The final of the Two Wheel Training 330 for coursing-bred greyhounds can go to Vacume Wizard, who looks smart enough to take advantage of a draw that should work in his favour.

Oaks sponsor Charlie McCarthy can take the opener with Deercrest Lady.
