Whelan: Tribe will need goals

Irish Examiner - Sport - - GAA - Daragh Small

Galway star forward Conor Whelan believes the Tribesmen are still nowhere near the finished article and they will need to find goals to overcome Wexford in the Leinster final.

“Wexford will be a huge test. We were happy we got over Offaly but we have to regroup for Wexford and please God we will show up on the day,” said Whelan.

“We have lots of areas to work on. We didn’t score a goal against Offaly and we were fairly disappointed with our afternoon, from that point of view.

“We put a big scoreline in the end but the scoreboard was a small bit flattering. Now it’s on to Wexford and we are just taking every game as it comes.

“We will take the Leinster final first and hopefully we can get the win and get to the All-ireland semi-final. That’s the main thing.”

Whelan says winning a second ever provincial title would be a big plus going into the All-ireland series.

“Wexford are a fairly good side and we are not taking anything for granted. Davy has changed things around but they have always been a really good side anyway,” said Whelan.

“I wouldn’t say we are looking for revenge after losing to them in the league. We are just looking to show up and put on a performance. Silverware would be a step forward but we are just looking for a massive performance on the day.”
