Gunners’ legend Paul Flynn swung over the winner four minutes from the end on a murky afternoon at Walsh Park. Firsthalf strikes by corner forwards Tommy Power and Gearoid O’connor sent them 2-4 to 0-4 ahead. In their maiden county final appearance, De La Salle rallied and Brian Phelan’s fortuitous goal gave them hope. John Mullane levelled matters for Eddie O’connor’s men before Flynn secured victory.

Salle finally made the breakthrough in 2008 and followed it up with a resounding triumph against their Eastern rivals. After losing 3-20 to 0-14 to the same opponents in the group stages, Michael Ryan’s side torched the Gunners with three second-half goals. Paidi Nevin netted twice and Dean Twomey also goaled. David O’sullivan grabbed a late consolation for the Gunners. “I think we’ve finally got the respect we deserve,” remarked Salle top scorer John Mullane.

The county and Munster champions were dethroned in stormy circumstances. This was their fifth meeting in three seasons and tensions quickly spilt over. A mass brawl erupted after just four minutes, resulting in a straight red card for Paidi Nevin. Ballygunner made their numerical advantage count with David O’sullivan and JJ Hutchinson driving home goals either side of half-time. While Salle missed giltedged chances from frees, Pauric Mahony delivered seven points.
