Gun­ners’ leg­end Paul Flynn swung over the win­ner four min­utes from the end on a murky af­ter­noon at Walsh Park. Firsthalf strikes by cor­ner for­wards Tommy Power and Gearoid O’con­nor sent them 2-4 to 0-4 ahead. In their maiden county fi­nal ap­pear­ance, De La Salle ral­lied and Brian Phe­lan’s for­tu­itous goal gave them hope. John Mul­lane lev­elled mat­ters for Ed­die O’con­nor’s men be­fore Flynn se­cured vic­tory.

Salle fi­nally made the break­through in 2008 and fol­lowed it up with a re­sound­ing tri­umph against their Eastern ri­vals. Af­ter los­ing 3-20 to 0-14 to the same op­po­nents in the group stages, Michael Ryan’s side torched the Gun­ners with three sec­ond-half goals. Paidi Nevin net­ted twice and Dean Twomey also goaled. David O’sul­li­van grabbed a late con­so­la­tion for the Gun­ners. “I think we’ve fi­nally got the re­spect we de­serve,” re­marked Salle top scorer John Mul­lane.

The county and Mun­ster cham­pi­ons were de­throned in stormy cir­cum­stances. This was their fifth meet­ing in three sea­sons and ten­sions quickly spilt over. A mass brawl erupted af­ter just four min­utes, re­sult­ing in a straight red card for Paidi Nevin. Bal­ly­gun­ner made their nu­mer­i­cal ad­van­tage count with David O’sul­li­van and JJ Hutchin­son driv­ing home goals ei­ther side of half-time. While Salle missed gilt­edged chances from frees, Pau­ric Ma­hony de­liv­ered seven points.
