Calm Conte has no job concerns

Danny Drinkwater’s value to Chelsea has increased even though he has yet to kick a ball for the club. The former Leicester City midfielder’s €39 million move to Chelsea on transfer deadline day was one of the more surprising moves of the window.

Yes, the England international forged a title-winning partnership with N’golo Kante when the pair were at the King Power Stadium, but the switch carried all the hallmarks of squad filling. Having finally joined in with firstteam training last week, the player’s status has changed and his availability is anticipated more keenly largely because of Kante’s hamstring injury and Tiemoue Bakayoko’s continuing poor form following his arrival from Monaco. Confirmation of Chelsea’s shortcomings in central midfield came in David Luiz’s chaotic display against Watford after being pushed forward from defence against AS Roma.

It’s a shame for Drinkwater he hasn’t been available to establish himself this month, but his chance will come when he is fully fit.
