Silva the saviour as City equal 13-win record

Lost in the last four City victories, that have all required winning goals inside the final seven minutes, is the curious case of Pep Guardiola’s left-back “crisis.” When City splurged £140m on three full-backs in 10 days over the summer, it looked as if Guardiola’s demand that the club completely revitalise that position had been answered.

However, Benjamin Mendy’s serious knee injury early in the campaign instantly proved a headache but, arguably more damaging, has been the form of Danilo, signed for £26.5m from Real Madrid. Guardio- la has taken time to show faith in the Brazilian but, after a poor first half by his team yesterday — and Danilo in particular — he hauled him off, moved midfielder Fabian Delph back to his new left-back position and City’s attacking play improved exponentially. City, it appears, spent £140m on fullbacks last summer and currently have only a converted midfielder whom the manager trusts to play on the left.
