Bonus points stay

Irish Examiner - Sport - - RUGBY -

The bonus points system is here to stay in the Six Nations Championship. Officials have written off the proposed trial period and confirmed the incentivised system is now a fixture.

It differs from the Champions Cup or PRO14 format in only one important way — if a nation achieves a Grand Slam of five wins, it is awarded a further three match points as a reward, essentially to ensure the country that secures a Grand Slam must be champions. It eliminates a possible anomaly whereby a team could win all five matches without a bonus point (20 points) and could lose out to a country which loses one of its five games but wins the other four with a bonus point (20).
