When the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak struck, Ireland had to finish the championship in the autumn and they famously beat England. I was starting to go behind the scenes and I found myself in the changing room before the match and it was really blood and thunder then, not scientific. There was this sort of tribal huddle, you know, Mick Galwey and Keith Wood and Peter Clohessy swearing and telling everyone what they were going to do to the English, all really good stuff. Well, didn’t they drag Bertie Ahern in afterwards. When Johnno, Martin Johnson, and the England team wouldn’t move for President Mary Mcaleese.
