Cuala be­gin Dublin de­fence with a win

Af­ter just a fort­night to bask in their All-ire­land club glory, Cuala be­gan their de­fence of the Dublin SHC with a 1-14 to 1-7 Group 3 win over St Brigid’s at Par­nell Park on Satur­day.

The cham­pi­ons had a firsthalf fright when Con O’cal­laghan went down with what looked a nasty an­kle in­jury, and though the Dublin foot­ball star played on, he never moved with his cus­tom­ary flu­ency.

Brigid’s led 1-3 to 0-5 at the break, with Gerry Mur­phy get­ting the goal.

But Mat­tie Kenny’s four-in-arow seek­ers took over af­ter the break, with O’cal­laghan play­ing his part.

Brian Fitzger­ald got their goal and David Treacy and Colm Cronin con­trib­uted strongly as Brigid’s fin­ished with 14 men af­ter Dar­ragh Plun­kett picked up a sec­ond yel­low card.

Also at Par­nell Park, in Group 1, St Vin­cent’s had a 3-13 to 0-10 vic­tory over Ra­heny, with the goals com­ing from Cian Mcbride (20 and To­mas Mc­grane. Also in Group 1, St Jude’s over­came O’toole’s, 0-20 to 0-11.

Na Fianna and Kil­macud Crokes had al­ready opened their cam­paigns with wins over White­hall Colm­cille and Naomh Fionnbarra re­spec­tively.
