The favourite veg of mil­lions seemed un­der threat in Au­gust 1995 amid re­ports Euro­crats were plan­ning to out­law mushy peas. The Euro­pean Com­mis­sion did, in fact, is­sue guide­lines on which food colour­ings could and could not be used. But three — E102, E133 and E142 — sur­vived and can be used in tinned “pro­cessed mushy and gar­den peas”.
