Abrupt halt for double-deckers

Irish Examiner - Supplement - - 60 YEARS OF EUROPEAN UNITY -

An older generation was reminded of that much loved 1970s sitcom, On The Buses with Reg Varney and his conductor’s job with the Luxton & District Traction Company, with the 1994 story that the EU was planning to scrap double-decker buses. As usual, there was a degree of truth in the story — the Commission said that while it is trying to make buses and coaches safer and more accessible to people with disabilities, it had no plans to try to outlaw traditional double-deckers.

In 1994, the UK press reported on EU plans to ban their iconic red double- decker bus — again, wide of the true story.
