Global research leader
In Limerick, the EU has funded the Bernal Institute in University of Limerick, a ‘Made in Limerick’ project, as well as a National Student Enterprise Awards prize for students at Desmond College, Newcastle West.
In November 2016, funded under Horizon 2020, the new €96m Bernal Institute was officially opened in the University of Limerick. This multipurpose research space brings existing institutes into a single location.
The institute will house over 260 researchers — among them six world experts who already hold Bernal research chairs and who lead teams making discoveries in disciplines like crystal engineering, fluid mechanics and microscopy.
Prof Paul Weaver, Bernal chair of Composite Materials and Structures, at UL. He leads the research programme which is set to position Ireland as a global hub for advancing products and services in the composite materials sector.
