THE CHAIN GANG – get set to baroque and roll, says Annmarie O’Connor

When Gianni Versace reinvented the Baroque print with a pop-art twist, the late 80s was in the throw of a fashion frenzy. Italianate angels fought for dominance with leopard and chain prints; while maximalist palettes showed their true colours. Showy, excessive, gaudy – the trend reflected everything the 80s was about. With the era that was finding expression in the now, it’s no surprise brash baroque prints are having a moment. From Richard Quinn’s louche layering to scarves worn as earrings at Marine Serre, not to mention Donatella’s Balmoral pastiche; the memo is clear – more is, most definitely, more.
