Weather ‘worse’ 20 years ago

Irish Examiner - - Opinion -

As regards extreme weather, why is more attention not paid to actual records, rather than anecdotes.

The 52mm of rain in Clonroche, Co Wexford, on June 27, 1986 is about 1.5 times as much in one hour as Malin Head had in two hours last Tuesday, August 22.

The 77mm of rainfall at Malin Head on August 22 is exceeded by a factor of 3.2 by the 244mm at Cloone Lake, in Co Kerry, on September 18, 1993. Have a look at the extreme weather data on the Met Eireann website. It’s an eye-opener, with all the extremes recorded more than 20 years ago. Fintan Ryan
