‘Bag snatched’ from woman in wheel­chair

A man ac­cused of at­tempt­ing to rob a hand­bag from a wheel­chair-bound woman in her 80s was re­manded in cus­tody yes­ter­day un­til Septem­ber 27. Stephen McNa­mara, aged 42, of Gle­n­amoy Lawn, May­field, Cork, ap­peared at Cork Dis­trict Court yes­ter­day by video link from prison.

Det Garda Aoife Hayes said pre­vi­ously that the al­leged in­ci­dent oc­curred shortly be­fore 5pm at Henry St, Cork, on April 29, when a man ap­proached the el­derly lady in the wheel­chair and be­gan shout­ing at her to drop her hand­bag. “While pulling it from her he pulled it so hard the strap broke. While mak­ing good his es­cape, he dropped the hand­bag and failed to get any prop­erty,” said Det Garda Hayes. Judge Olann Kelle­her re­fused the bail ap­pli­ca­tion when the mat­ter first came be­fore the court on July 28.
