Senior garda signed off letter
The Disclosures Tribunal heard yesterday that a letter which cast a senior garda as mistakenly making a serious allegation against Sgt Maurice McCabe was signed off by the garda himself. On Monday, the tribunal was told that a letter in which Supt Noel Cunningham is alleged to have reported that Sgt McCabe expressed a grudge against another officer as the motive for bringing his complaints of malpractice contained a grave mistake. Tribunal lawyer Kathleen Leader said a person other than Supt Cunningham had made the error, wrongly suggesting that he was accusing Sgt McCabe of expressing the grudge. Yesterday, however, Michael McDowell, counsel for Sgt McCabe, told the tribunal it was now known that Supt Cunningham actually signed off on the letter.
“Ms Leader said an error was made in ascribing to Noel Cunningham the view that he [McCabe] made allegations against Michael Clancy,” Mr McDowell told the tribunal. “And the tribunal will know that Noel Cunningham was shown the letter and signed a copy of it and was asked for his agreement of the contents.”
How exactly the letter, which Sgt McCabe believes was designed to attack him, came to be created will be explored by the inquiry in the coming weeks.
