ONE of the country’s largest tillage farmers is about to jump on the dairy bandwagon.

George Walshe, who farms close to 3,500ac in and around Westmeath, has already purchased over 200 heifers, with a view to commencing calving in spring 2015.

“I’m not going to stop tillage farming but with the way things have gone so tight in that job at the moment I just want to see what way things pan out,” he said.

A no-frills herringbone parlour is set to be built on Mr Walshe’s home farm at Gaybrook south of Mullingar, and some quota has already been purchased to cover any milk produced during February and March in 2015.

He hopes to start with a milking herd of 250 cows.
