Beat Department deadline to avoid nitrates breach fine

Irish Independent - Farming - - FINANCE -

FARMERS who have breached nitrate limits should inform the Department of Agriculture of the measures they took during the year to bring down their limit before December 31 in order to avoid fines, the ICMSA has said.

ICMSA’s Patrick Rohan said that while the current penalty scheme is unfair and should have been reformed as part of the Nitrates Review, farmers should check their N status to avoid penalties.

“If farmers have breached these limits, they must now inform the Department before December 31 on the measures they took during the year to bring them under the limit,” said Mr Rohan.

“Affected farmers need to complete the relevant paperwork and then send it to the Nitrates Department, Johnstown Castle, Wexford.”
