Ω FOR­MER pro­fes­sional box­ing cham­pion, Barry McGuigan is sup­port­ing a cam­paign close to his heart to help raise aware­ness of blood cancer. Barry’s fa­ther Pat, who rep­re­sented Ire­land in the Euro­vi­sion song con­test, died of Non-Hodgkin’s Lym­phoma — a rare type of blood cancer.

A re­cent sur­vey showed two thirds of peo­ple have lit­tle knowl­edge of the dis­ease af­fect­ing 1,900 an­nu­ally. The three main groups are leukaemia, lym­phoma and myeloma.

Mem­bers of the pub­lic are in­vited to a free in­for­ma­tion event on the cancer on Wed­nes­day at 6.30pm in the Daven­port Ho­tel, Mer­rion St Lower. Speak­ers in­clude Eric Lowe, for­mer CEO of Myeloma UK, a psy­cho-on­col­o­gist and Rachel Fox, Hae­ma­tol­ogy Nurse Spe­cial­ist, Beau­mont Hos­pi­tal.
