REMEMBER: BEREAVEMENT IS NOT JUST AN EVENT FOR A CHILD —

Bereavement becomes part of a child’s life. He or she will feel the loss at different occasions and at different landmark stages in their lives such as birthdays, First Communions, Confirmations, 21st birthdays or weddings — and often when they reach the age at which a parent died.

It is important, says Keegan, to remember this and not to expect a child to process a loss within a particular period.
