Go­ing back to school fol­low­ing the loss of a loved one can be very chal­leng­ing, says Jones.

Par­ents should al­ways dis­cuss the re­turn with the child and ac­knowl­edge that it may be dif­fi­cult. It is also im­por­tant to en­sure that the school prin­ci­pal and the child’s teacher is aware of the be­reave­ment be­fore the child re­turns. Re­quest that a key per­son, some­one to whom the child can talk, be made avail­able school — this may be the class­room teacher. Ask that this per­son check in gen­tly with the child on their first day or two back.
