BEREAVEMENT IS NORMAL: DON’T HIDE IT OR PLAY IT DOWN —
“Children will be bereaved at some stage — more than a quarter of children will have lost a grandparent by age nine,” says Orla Keegan. So if there is a bereavement, don’t pretend nothing is wrong, she advises.
“Bereavement is normal. Don’t hide it from a child. Don’t pretend that nothing has happened. Sometimes people decide not to give details of what has happened. Bereavement is hard, but it is a fact of life. Don’t be overprotective in terms of shielding children from necessary grief.”
