÷ IRELAND has the fastest growing palliative care needs in Europe due to increasing numbers of deaths from cancer and neurodegenerative conditions including dementia. ÷ Palliative care is end-of-life care which provides support for people who are in the last months or years of their life . ÷ Research from Trinity College in Dublin said palliative care teams provide pain and symptom management guidance to patients with serious illness. ÷ They also provide care options before and after discharge and help patients and their families make the best decisions in relation to their needs. ÷ The research found that not only is palliative care associated with a shorter hospital stay and lower costs, but that this effect is greatest for those with the most complex health needs for whom often the highest costs are associated with their care. The research was published in a recent edition of JAMA Internal Medicine.
