BEETROOT —

Beetroot juice has been shown to sig­nif­i­cantly de­crease blood pres­sure. As one in seven Ir­ish adults has high blood pres­sure, they may ben­e­fit from a lit­tle ex­tra beetroot in their life. High blood pres­sure causes dam­age silently in your body, every minute of every day. Beetroot is nat­u­rally rich in things called ni­trates which cause blood ves­sels to widen when it’s turned into ni­tric ox­ide within the body. This is how beetroot re­duces sys­tolic blood pres­sure by 4.4mm Hg, on av­er­age. Re­search sug­gests that a sys­tolic blood pres­sure re­duc­tion of at least 5mm Hg could de­crease the risk of death by stroke by 14pc and death from heart dis­ease by 9pc. There­fore, a lit­tle beet could go a long way.
