Beetroot juice has been shown to significantly decrease blood pressure. As one in seven Irish adults has high blood pressure, they may benefit from a little extra beetroot in their life. Beetroot is naturally rich in things called nitrates which cause blood vessels to widen when it’s turned into nitric oxide within the body. This is how beetroot reduces systolic blood pressure by 4.4mm Hg, on average. Research suggests that a systolic blood pressure reduction of at least 5mm Hg could decrease the risk of death by stroke by 14pc and death from heart disease by 9pc. Therefore, a little beet could go a long way.
