Things take the time they take

American poet Mary Oliver wrote a line of poetry that goes through my head at least once a week. That line is: “Things take the time they take. Don’t worry.” I read it when I was two years into writing a book I thought I could do in two months, and it gave me huge comfort. Since then I’ve realised that things rarely happen to the schedule we want them to. If we’re in our 20s we feel we’re too slow in finding a career. In our 30s we might be too slow in finding love or starting a family. In our 50s we might think it’s too late to start a new career. But so what? We don’t all run to the same schedule. We are not trains. We do things our own way and in our own time and no matter what it may feel like, wherever you are now is exactly where you need to be.
