Melodrama (Virgin EMI)
At 20, New Zealander Lorde is already a well-seasoned pro and she’s not short of ambition: she recently declared she wanted to be the next Joni Mitchell. This aptly titled second album is nothing like that: instead, it’s a full-on pop opus that muscles into Swift and Perry territory. But there’s enough of the outsider-art demonstrated on her debut to keep things interesting. It’s a mixed bag, but some songs truly deliver, not least ‘Perfect Places’.
